About Anishinaabemodaa.com - Our Mission
Written by Administrator
Our Way of Life! Working to revitalize the Anishinaabe language.

From the beginning of time the Creator has given the Anishinaabeg many beautiful gifts. These gifts are reflected in the stories told by our Elders, the teachings of Nanabozho, the knowledge of plants, our family doodems and our relationship to all of life. The fullness of these teachings can only be expressed through our language. When we attempt to share these gifts with our children, in the English language, much is lost in the translation.

Our mission is to assist in the revitalization of the Anishinaabe language and culture through preservation, education and collaboration. We believe the language is the gateway to our individual and collective connection to our ancestors and the Anishinaabeg way of life. Anishinaabemodaa.com is taking a stand to insure the language will continue to flurish for generations to come. Our ancestors fought to preserve this knowledge and now it is our responsibility to do the same. Our children deserve the chance to learn.

For those who share this philosophy we invite you to join with us in creating a network for learning, sharing, and exploring the diversity of our language.

The Anishinaabe language or Anishinaabemowin is one of the most prominent languages spoken in the United States and Canada . There are five distinct language regions, as defined by linguists, and several dialects within each. Statistics have shown that many of these dialects have disappeared and others are on the verge of disappearing. For those areas concerned about the loss of their individual dialect we have posted information on a series of booklets, developed by the Indigenous Language Institute, that can help in understanding the steps involved in working to revitalize a language. Please visit our Awakening Our Language page for more information.

Due to the economic challenges on the reservations many of the Anishinaabeg have moved from the reservations into the unban settings to raise their families. There are those who have made this transition and feel the urgency to connect with their culture and learn their language. Many of which are facing hardships that do not allow them the opportunity to return to the reservations to learn from their Elders. They have found that in the urban jungle there are few people who speak the Anishinaabe language and even fewer Elders. We hope this site is able to help those searching for instructional material and encourage each of you to continue your pursuit in the quest to speak our native tongue.
